Which is to say, these are both very important in our camp as they provide the energy campers need throughout the day and evening. The motorcycles aren’t the only things we need to gas up, after all! And, we’ve come a long way over the last decade and a half in what we offer to our campers and how we do meals. We know we’re scoring big whenever parents tell us that their child “raves” about the meals or brags that they get to eat as much as they want all day long.
Breakfasts are full with choices including such staples as scrambled eggs, bacon, pancakes, cereal, fruit, OJ & milk as well as special offerings the ever-popular sausage kolaches, cinnamon rolls and breakfast tacos.
During each group’s 20 minute break from riding, campers drink chilled water or gatorade, and eat a variety of crackers with and without peanut butter or cheese, with apple slices. Sliced by our counselors right on-site, so no one has to eat yucky brown pieces. Gluten and nut-free snacks provided as requested for those who need these options. NOTE: water alone won’t hydrate enough – what our campers eat helps too. Fresh fruits help with their water content and crackers, with their sodium content, combat sweat-loss to prevent dehydration. Our Gatorade option helps with its added electrolytes and the kids love the taste!
Menu items include hot and cold food with lots of choices everyday:
Hamburgers * Cheeseburgers * Made to Order Sandwiches * Hot Dogs * Corn Dogs * Pizzas * Fresh Fruit & Fixin’s * French Fries * Salads * Chicken Nuggets * Mac & Cheese * Boiled Eggs * Daily Dessert * Lemonade * Gatorade * Water * Condiments
All of our hot foods are cooked or oven-baked fresh on a daily basis. Our sandwiches are handmade and include deli-style meats and cheeses, PB&J or Nutella choices. Sample fruits and veggies include grapes, bananas, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, baby carrots, snap peas & sliced dill pickles. Dessert changes daily, from oversized cookies to ice cream treats, brownies and cupcakes and pudding. Condiments include staples such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, ranch dressing and picante sauce.
After riding is done for the day, our campers cool off at the Pool where we serve them chilled watermelon slices & frozen ice pops. Both of these help with hydration and taste great! We go through one whole watermelon a day and lots of ice pops, in every imaginable color and flavor. Very popular!
Swimmers can come on over to the Cafe before the daily video review to get additional snacks that vary by the day and that differ from all else that is offered earlier. Sample options: Mac & Cheese, handmade cheese Quesadillas, fruit, Crackers & Treats, Cereal & Milk… There are always at least two choices plus iced water, lemonade or Gatorade.
We consider dinners to be “Kid Gourmet”, meaning home-cooked favorites with all the trimmings and a different dessert each night. There are ALWAYS lots of choices to accommodate special diets, allergies and tastes. With advance planning, gluten-free and vegetarian options can be provided if not already available. As an example, gluten-free pasta and breads and treats can be made available for your camper’s week. See contact link below for Mrs. Turner’s direct number for questions, comments, concerns and pre-planning. Some parents have also preferred to bring some of their child’s own supply of special foods needed. Although not necessary, we do have room to store/freeze such items and can plan to incorporate them into their child’s meals during his/her camp week.
We celebrate the end of a fun day, after the evening swim with a special treat, music and talking about the day. These can include: S’more’s made campfire-side, Ice Cream Sundaes, Ice Cream Floats, Special Cakes and more.
That’s it in a nut shell for camp food and hydration. Our campers get well taken care of – feed the body, feed the soul! Or, as Pooh says:
“What could be more important than a little something to eat?”
